The "Grand Unified Theory" of The Dark Zone: An Adventure Racing Podcast is simple. It's an outlet for racers of all types and stripes to come together over the stories, lessons, and races that make up this wonderful sport. First published in July 2021, TDZ has featured amateur racers, world champions, race directors, and those who love to adventure for wide-ranging and fun conversations. All are welcome to join The Dark Zone.
After taking off my teens to, well, be a teenager and my twenties to start a career and family, I stumbled into endurance sports in a typical manner. The local 5K grew into a 10K and then a half-marathon, and then a marathon, and then I was literally off to races. Since 2002, I've had the chance to race bicycles in NYC, complete 30+ marathons, 4 Ironman races, a bunch of self-supported stuff like a bikepacking trip across Newfoundland, and a rim-to-rim-to-rim crossing of the Grand Canyon. I discovered adventure racing in 2012 and have enjoyed it ever since. AR brings together all those other disciplines, throws in a bunch of navigation, and the need to be a good teammate. That, alongside all the great people and stories, has been a winning formula and I consider myself very lucky to be part of such a great global community.
